The Road to Zion
It’s amazing, isn’t it, when we consider how sovereignly the Spirit of God moves? We have so much to be thankful for, this year in particular. It warms my heart to stand at the corner foot of our land and take in the majestic panorama that unfolds. I am taken on a journey as I am led to study the tiered structure—a representation of a mighty fortress. Her lower foothill gently arcs across the border, marking the beginning boundaries.

My gaze is then drawn to climb the steeps of the middle tier whose beauty is skirted in a gown of velvet green. What a rampart she is, strategically adorned and strengthened in evergreen pine. Like the presence of God, she oversees the foothill altar stretched out before her. She is young now and I picture her in her flourishing years to come. She sways to the windsong as her hands clap in rhythmic praise, piercing the upper heights. Enraptured by her outward loveliness, my heart longs to remain—no lower, no higher—but instead I am called to higher ground. In submission, I answer.
As I fix my eyes on the upper tier, I find myself confronted by a ragged cliff dressed in a wilderness landscape. She towers over all, below and beyond, as if to say all is under her careful watch. I longed to see what it was she was protecting. Discouraged at the thought of trekking this daunting rise of earth, I instead decided to walk about her.
I came upon an opening—a road of access. I followed the winding path as it led me upward, directly through the wilderness. I learned to watch my footing as the road was not yet smooth. There was protection in walking this path, keeping me from the hazards along the way. To my left and to my right I saw high rocky cliffs, deep ravines, and even a steel giant armed with the fiercest claw.

Steadily I continued, onward and upward, taking me to the place I longed to see. Upon her crest was an opening. I was astounded as a glorious citadel of towering trees captured my heart. Fortified with majesty, she creates an aura of sanctuary—a holy place. As I scoped the grounds within her shielding, I discovered a littering of giant boulders and piles of rubble. Climbing atop the rubble for a higher view, I could see the morning sunlight rising and shining upon her.
She is a beautiful work in progress, being transformed in the warmth of the penetrating light. And through Spirit eyes, I see her—Mount Zion, a sparkling city in God’s perfection.
